Music I listen to
Interesting facts about me
Hi! My name is Miriam and I live in Port Penn, Delaware on about 11 acres of farmland. My husband and I have one son who is 8
years old. I didn't really get into birding all that much until I moved to Port Penn about 4 years ago. I started with hummingbird feeders. I had tried
everywhere I lived before and never had a hummingbird. Now I have them ALL the time and I love them! That was the beginning for me.
Next I decided to put up Purple Martin housing in the back yard and one nestbox in the front yard. The first year I had tree swallows in the front box and the Purple Martins arrived and seemed to use their gourds. Next we had Barn Swallows trying to nest on our front porch. Since they make a mess of the porch and are too territorial when they have young I decided to ask my father, who can make ANYTHING, if he'd make me a nest box for Barn Swallows. I placed it out back, but they never took it. I assume I didn't know enough about their nesting behavior. Then two Fall's ago I had a pair of bluebirds arrive and try to use the open front box my father built for the barn swallows. These determined Blues built a nest and even layed a clutch of eggs in a fully exposed box! Obviously that clutch didn't survive (aside from the fact it was an open faced box, it was October!). Since the loved that spot so much, I replaced that barn swallow box with a bluebird box and the very next spring they were back building their first successful nest in my yard. They have returned every year.
Now I have tree swallows, bluebirds, purple martins and hummingbirds. I also have plans to build my own nest boxes as a project with my son this summer. These new nest boxes will replace the ones currently in my yard and allow me to add additional nesting space for blues and tree swallows.
